MOVIE: Old School
First of all you have to go into the theater expecting this to be a stupid movie, obviously. I did and I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't embarrassingly bad nor did it make me groan...well, maybe once or twice, but otherwise I loved it. There was even a part where I was holding my sides because they hurt from laughing so hard. It was the tranquilizer-in-the-jugular part. The cast was great, except the love interest who was just plain annoying. I don't know why. I guess it's because you knew that they were trying to make her all pretty-pretty and it just ended up making her annoying. She was all smiley with long, wavy blonde hair, a girly-girl voice AND she even had freckles. Whut-evuh! Anyway, I loved Vince Vaughn as the married guy with kids who masterminds this whole fraternity-that-crosses-all-social-boundaries. That scene in the trailer where he does gymnastic rings with a smoking cigarette dangling from his mouth says it all about his character. Luke Wilson as the straight man was pretty good too but forgettable when book-ended by Vince Vaughn and Will "Frank the Tank" Ferrell. It was a good thing he was the main character, else you'd forget about him. But I guess his presence prevented the movie from degenerating into a film with all funny and no plot. WF was priceless and pleasantly un-SNL-alumni-ish. If that makes any sense. His character actually had more than one-dimension. He was a newlywed who tries to get on with his life as an adult, saying good-bye to his juvenile past of drinking and partying but ends up failing miserably and hilariously. So, yes, I recommend "Old School." If you just want to be entertained and to laugh but not feel embarrassed, this is a great movie to see.
